Alocasia odora 'Variegata', often called Variegated Night-Scented Lily, Variegated Giant Taro, or Variegated Elephant Ear, brings a luminous, tropical presence to indoor collections and warm-climate landscapes. Its broad, upright leaves unfurl in changing patterns of rich green, creamy white, pale lime, and occasional mint, ensuring that no two leaves look exactly alike. Strong petioles hold the dramatic foliage aloft, creating a layered silhouette that feels architectural yet lush. Mature leaves can become impressively large, and their softly rippled surfaces catch the light to emphasize every marbled sector, splash, and brushstroke.

This evergreen aroid develops from a sturdy central base and grows as a self-heading clump rather than a trailing vine. In favorable warmth, bright filtered light, and steady moisture, it can reach a commanding size while maintaining an elegant, upright habit. New leaves emerge tightly rolled, then open gradually to reveal fresh variegation; older specimens may also produce pale, fragrant, calla-like blooms, the feature behind the night-scented name. Its bold proportions make it a natural floor-plant focal point, a striking conservatory specimen, or a sheltered patio accent. Because the light-colored portions contain less chlorophyll, growth may be more measured than in an all-green Alocasia odora, but the plant rewards attentive care with continually evolving color and truly unmistakable character.

• Physical Characteristics: Large, shield-to-heart-shaped leaves rise on thick, upright stalks, forming a bold, fountain-like clump. Each blade carries an individual mix of deep green, cream, ivory, mint, or pale lime, from fine speckles to broad sectors. Mature size varies with setting, but generous warmth and root space encourage taller stems and increasingly expansive foliage.

• Sunlight Requirements: Place the plant in bright, indirect light where its contrasting colors remain vivid without prolonged exposure to harsh midday rays. Gentle morning or late-afternoon sun can suit an acclimated specimen, while a sheer curtain softens stronger windows. Rotate the container periodically so the upright canopy develops evenly instead of leaning toward one light source.

• Watering Guidelines: Water thoroughly when the upper 1–2 inches of the potting mix feel slightly dry, allowing excess water to drain completely. Aim for even, moderate moisture rather than a constant soak or repeated full drying. Reduce frequency during cooler, dimmer periods as growth slows, and empty standing water from saucers or cachepots so the root zone remains well aerated.
