Foxtail Fern brings sculptural texture and vivid green color to indoor displays, patios, and warm-climate landscapes. Despite its familiar name, it is not a true fern; Asparagus myersii is an evergreen perennial in the asparagus family, also sold as Myers' asparagus fern, foxtail asparagus, or plume asparagus. Its signature stems rise and arch in dense, tapered columns, each packed with fine, needlelike cladodes that create the plush silhouette of a fox's tail. The upright plumes feel orderly yet lively, adding strong form without the loose, trailing habit seen in many related asparagus plants. Mature specimens develop a broad, mounded outline, with numerous emerald spears emerging from a central crown and holding their shape beautifully in containers or borders.

Beneath the foliage, a robust network of fleshy roots stores moisture and helps established plants manage brief dry spells. Growth is clumping rather than vining, so the plant gradually gains width while its plumes commonly reach about 2 to 3 feet tall and spread roughly 3 to 4 feet under favorable conditions. Small white flowers may appear among the stems, followed by decorative red berries that provide a bright seasonal accent. Foxtail Fern remains attractive throughout the year where winters are mild and adapts well to life as a houseplant in cooler regions. Its combination of symmetrical structure, rich color, and soft-looking texture makes it a distinctive choice for entry pots, mixed planters, poolside beds, and contemporary landscape designs.

    • Physical Characteristics: Dense, bottlebrush-like plumes grow from a compact central crown, forming an upright, arching mound with a polished architectural profile. Fine, needlelike cladodes create a soft appearance, while mature plants generally reach 2 to 3 feet in height and about 3 to 4 feet in width. Tiny white blooms and red berries may add subtle seasonal detail.

    • Sunlight Requirements: Place Foxtail Fern in bright, indirect light indoors or in partial sun outdoors. Gentle morning light encourages dense, richly colored growth, while some afternoon shade is especially helpful in hot climates. Too little light can produce thin, leaning stems, but harsh midday exposure may fade or scorch the foliage, so choose a balanced, sheltered position.

    • Watering Guidelines: Water thoroughly when the upper inch or two of the growing mix feels dry, then allow excess water to drain away. Keep moisture reasonably consistent during active growth without leaving the roots in standing water. Established plants tolerate short dry intervals, but prolonged dryness can dull the foliage; reduce watering somewhat when growth slows in cooler months.

    • Soil Preferences: Use a loose, well-drained mix that holds light moisture while allowing air to reach the fleshy root system. A quality container blend amended with coarse sand, fine bark, or perlite works well, and outdoor beds should release water readily after rain. Slightly acidic to neutral conditions are suitable; always select a pot with drainage openings to prevent saturation.

    • Growth Rate and Maintenance: Foxtail Fern grows at a moderate pace, gradually widening as fresh spears emerge from the crown. Its naturally tidy form needs little shaping; remove only brown, damaged, or aging stems at the base to refresh its appearance. Repot container plants when crowded, and divide established clumps when needed to manage size or create additional specimens.

    Testimonials

    "Came in perfect condition--thank you!"

    Natalie

"Amazing Plants! I was so happy to see these way larger than the plants pictured because I know how slow most cycads grow."

    Matthew

"This is the first time I've ever ordered plants online, so I had no idea what to expect. When I saw the description of 'comes in a 4" growers' pot' I figured I'd be getting some fairly small plants--nope! The bamboo palms were fully 2' tall from root to top leaf, and perfectly healthy. All 5 plants were VERY well secured in their box, to the point that the bottom layer was even spray-foamed to the cardboard! I couldn't ask for a better experience and I'm so excited to see these plants grow. Five stars!"

    Nathaniel

"Thrilled with my purchase! This seller went above any beyond! The packaging was very careful, the plants are so much bigger than I expected, and I was given more than what was depicted in the item description. 10/10 all round!"

    Trisha

"This is SO BEAUTIFUL! Packaging was perfect and efficient, plant was in excellent condition. I'm in love with this plant and I will definitely order more."
