    A spectacular new and recently described cycad from Bocas del Toro, Panama, where it grows on a remote offshore Island on sandy soil very close to the coast. It forms a trunk to 2.8 m tall, topped by a a crown of up to 20 large leaves to 2.4 m (8 ft.) that hold up to 12 pairs of giant, elliptic, pleated (grooved) leaflets to nearly 40 cm (16 in.) long. The new leaves emerge bright green. Its leaflets are more numerous but slightly smaller than those of Z. skinneri and it is considerably larger in all aspects than Z. neurophyllidia. Understandably, is highly desired by cycad collectors. In cultivation it is easy and relatively fast growing and, especially when small, does best in sandy soil. Zamia nesophila is a wonderfully grooved leaf plant from Panama. It grows in islands in the Bocas del Toro region of Panama. The species name "nesophila", means "island-loving" in latin. Its large plicate (grooved) leaves, emerge light green, hardening off to a deep glossy green.
