    • If you live in an area with warm winters and no long periods of subfreezing temperatures, you could use tropical trees and plants as part of your landscape plan. The bay rum tree (Pimenta racemosa), also called the West Indian bay tree, is a Caribbean native tropical that can be used as a specimen or part of a mixed planting.
    • Bay rum tree generally is suitable for U.S. Department of Agriculture plant hardiness zones 10 and 11. In zone 10, average minimum temperatures in winter are 30 to 35 degrees Fahrenheit, and occasional frosts develop. A bay rum tree can withstand 32 degrees Fahrenheit for short periods of time, but it begins to develop leaf damage at 30 degrees Fahrenheit.
    • If you live in an area where temperatures could drop below freezing for a few hours, you can help a bay rum tree avoid cold injury by choosing a warm and sheltered planting location for it. Siting the tree near a building's south-facing wall that tends to store heat can minimize the chance of the tree's injury during cold winter mornings.
    • The bay rum tree is named for the cologne called "Bay Rum" that traditionally was distilled from its leaves with rum and water. The tree is medium size, growing about 20 feet in height at maturity. Its leaves are oval, stiff and contain an aromatic oil; they can be used in cooking to add clovelike flavoring to dishes.
